Is this a troll?
Locking targets is one of the most critical components of gameplay. If you don't lock targets, then you're not playing right!

"Hey, I suck and don't lock my targets but I get annoyed at a game mechanic that is there for people like me."
Many benefits to locking your target even while torso twisting. Multi-tasking hitting the lock target key isn't hard while engaging and even spreading damage.

At the risk of possibly responding to a troll post, but hopeful that some new player might see this and improve:
Locking targets is one of THE MOST important things you can do. It tells your team where an enemy is and what it is. It tells you what weapons an enemy is carrying (and if they have short-range stuff or things with a minimum range you can really exploit that.) and if they have any damaged areas you should be shooting for. It allows LRM mechs to help by hitting your target. The list goes on, and you should ALWAYS make a habit of locking whatever you are looking at every time. It takes about an eighth of a second to tap that "R" button, and can mean the difference between a win, a loss, a kill, or a death. Any old MWO vet will tell you this.

Because it is teamwork and should be avoided at all costs.
I just love these people that cannot be bothered to do something and want someone else to do it for them.

There is no way someone with the 1% title is arguing for not locking.
If the OP is really not trolling then I pray they aren't on my team.

that's barely even enough time to press R or even bothered with it.

Because the enemy gets a subtle indication (light ping inside cockpit) that they have been targeted. It gives you away when you are sneaking up on someone.
Has happened to me before.

How do you ever shoot at anyone if you you are too scared to expose yourself long enough to press one button?

Just have the mechs pick up rocks and chunk them

If I want to lock on a mech, I would. In fact, I read so fast that scanning a mech's loadout is not a burden for me, and typically I lock onto as many people as possible.
However, if I chance on this guy that is 0 ping and I want to check on enemies' info in the meanwhile, auto lock really screws with me.
What's more, it drags more of my teammates out of position than it should due to bloodlust and belief that the enemies are over here.
Plus an additional reason that PGI might understand.
edit: OK nevermind now that I read the thread, the reason in question was already stated by Yosharian (damn you Yosharian

This especially sucks since I like sneaking.
